'It is early evening when I pull over above the river at Le Lézard Bleu, the village bar in Vieussan. When I turn off the engine, a wave of nightingale song rolls up out of the valley, riding over the deeper music of the mountain water racing along the winding avenue of a riverside forest. All along the river, invisible nightingales are singing in every bamboo and sandy sallow grove, in the walled cherry orchards on the alluvial soil of the flood plain, beneath every stone village crawling up the hillside.' - Roger Deakin, Wildwood, Penguin 2008, p. 197.

From the house it is a short walk across the medieval bridge to the relaxed café-restaurant, the Lézard Bleu (with red roof) an excellent venue for light lunches or dinner. It also has the best Belgian beer menu in the south of France!

Up the hill is the medieval village of Vieussan (above) with its narrow streets, Vieussan sits on a peninsula around which flows the River Orb, surrounded by wooded mountains.

There are wine and (in summer) vegetable outlets in the village. The bakery and other shops are in the nearby village of Mons La Trivalle (7 minutes drive). The other direction down the valley is Roquebrun (10 mins) which has a fine Mediterranean Garden, 2 great restaurants, as well as a wine bar, a grocery store, a bar, newsagent, Pizzeria and baker.

The nearest market is on Tuesdays at Lamalou-les-Bains (15 minutes) and there are others every day of the week in neighbouring towns. There are big supermarkets en route to the house from all main directions.

Vieussan is home to a large number of donkeys, which can be hired for a circular walk round a small mountain and along the river valley - the donkey carries your small child and your picnic!

Mountains, hills and gorges provide wonderful walking - and birdwatching, with golden orioles and eagles often seen from the house.

We are 40-45 minutes from the historic towns of Béziers and Pézenas. And don't forget that the Mediterranean is just an hour away.
